On Sunday March 22,1998 at about 5:20 a.m. a tragic fire took the lives of eleven Northumberland County and Lancaster County young adults. All perished in their sleep when the Centre County cabin where they were camping caught fire and burned to the ground.
Eight were Line Mountain High School students or graduates:
Chad Hain, 21
Jason Herrold, 20
Kip Snyder, 18
Tyrone Wehry, 23
Toni Wehry, 23
Amanda Wehry, 18
David Wiest, 21
Toby Wiest, 17
Their three friends were 1995 graduates of Warwick High School, Lancaster County:
Erik Grey, Nicholas Berkey and James Giliberti.
David and Toby were sons of Bill and Karen Wiest. Bill is a Northumberland County judge and president of the Mahanoy and Mahantongo Historical & Preservation Society. Karen teaches at Line Mountain High School. Bill also coaches the Line Mountain Odyssey of the Mind team. Toby, Kip and Amanda were members of that team and were looking forward to the April 18 competition.

Below are listed the scholarships and charities which have been established in memory of these young people.
